The is sad tale of William Henderson,

This is a sad tale of William Henderson, I am grateful for the permission of Murdoch Henderson to reproduce this story and photographs from his family tree.

The photographs above are of William Henderson’s gravestone, his brothers (Alexander Reid Henderson on the left, Charles John Henderson in the middle with William on the right), his parents William and Mary Henderson (Nee Chree) and the Procurator Fiscals report on the death.

On the 26th August 1918 a sad event took place at the Sunnybrae shop Glenbuchat

William Chree Henderson, aged 6, was at the Shop with his older brother Charles John Henderson. It seems that a loaded shotgun was lying against the counter and his brother picked it up and fired it at him not realising there was a live cartridge in the gun. William was only aged 6. At the time the Henderson’s lived at Belnacraig Glenbuchat.

There is a grave stone in the Glenbuchat Churchyard which reads:

"In Memory of William Henderson
aged 6 years.
His Grandfather William Chree”

His Grandfather was William Chree of the Chree family who ran the Sunnybrae shop, a fact which makes the whole incident more distressing.

William Henderson, his father, had been born out of wedlock as well as his older sister Jessie, his parents marrying in 1886 when he was 5. He was brought up at the Mains as noted in the 1881 census return. His sister Jessie however stayed with her mother Jean Murdoch at Belnaboth (1881 enumerated @ BelnaBoth, Glenbucket with parents, brothers John and James and daughter Jessie)

1881 Census: The Mains which supported five other households:
Elspet Hosie, 67, born Keith
and her grandson James Hosie, 10, scholar,
Ann Brodie, shepherd¹s wife (supposedly husband away on work) 26, Grange
And her children
Elizabeth 2, Auchindoir and
Mary A, 10 months, Auchindoir.
Mary A Wilson, a 37-year-old pauper born in Strathdon with her children
Jane, 12, scholar, Strathdon;
William, 9, scholar, Strathdon;
Ann, 7 scholar, Glenbucket.
Alexander Spence, general labourer, 67, Kirkmichael and daughter
Isabella as a general servent domestic, 32, Glenbucket;
Alexander, 28, general labourer, Glenbucket;
Alexander McRobie, grandson, 18, farm servant, Glenbucket;
Elizabeth Gordon, granddaughter 1, Glenbucket and
William Henderson, described as a boarder, five months old, Glenbucket.
James Glennie, 48, born Strathdon, was a post runner, and lived on the property with his wife
Barbra,45, Strathdon: daughters
Mary A 17, Strathdon,
Isabella 10, Glenbucket and Eliza, 6, Glenbucket; and sons
Alexander R, 13, scholar, Glenbucket;
