Glenbuchat Descendants visit the Glen
In June 2026, Glenbuchat was visited by Joan Barker Lunn and her daughter Sarah Lunn. Joan lives in London but has a strong and long-standing family connection with the Glen.

5 The Hay-Allanach (Joan’s) family tree.

Joan has a number of ancestors who carry familiar names in the annals of Glenbuchat, i.e. the Hay, Reid, Ogg, and Allanach families.
Joan was brought up in Cheshire and studied Psychology at the University of Durham, followed by a Ph.D. in Education at the University of London. Her external examiner for her Ph.D. was Professor Nisbet from Aberdeen who was well known as the owner of the red roofed cottage at Upperton. Sadly, at the time, neither knew of their connection.

At the start of the war Joan was three and stayed with her parents in Merseyside but her sister Mary was evacuated during the blitz to stay with her great-aunt Nellie Allanach, who lived in Park House at Bellabeg. There Mary attended the school at Strathdon. Joan’s brother went to stay with relatives in Ballater. Joan recalls taking the sleeper train north from Liverpool to visit her sister in Strathdon. Merseyside was not a safe place to be, and when a bomb landed in their garden, the family moved to mid-Cheshire.
Joan has just finished writing a book of her ancestors and hopefully we will hear more about it.
Joan has written

“I've just finished writing a book about our ancestors, who can be traced back to 1660 and who lived in Upperton, Glenbuchat, for more than 250 years. My great-grandmother was Ann Allanach (Ann MacKenzie) (1833-1924), and her daughter Mary Allanach, who was born in Upperton, was my grandmother. My great-great- grandparents were Robert Allanach (1791-1856) and Mary Hay (1791-1863), who also lived in Upperton. It is through the Hay line that our family's presence there can be traced back to 1660.”
