8. Suicide of William Walker Upperton 1872

The above cutting from the Dundee Courier of Saturday 3rd February 1872 relates to the sad suicide in prison of William Walker of Glenbuchat.

The articles above are from The Dundee Courier reproduced by kind permission of the British Newspaper Archive

William Walker was born in Glenbuchat about 25th September 1817. He was the son of John Walker and Helen McRobbie and was a shoemaker. He had two partners, Jean Walker his first partner to whom he had one child and Margaret Ross who died in 1846. He lived latterly at Upperton. Jean, his first partner had five partners altogether of her own and gave birth in 1842 to child of James Lindsay after leaving William Walker. Therefore from 1846 he was on his own and latterly lived with his grandson William McPherson and his sister Jane or Jean and she was the person he assaulted before being taken to prison where he committed suicide.

From Leopard Magazine, demise-of-a-strathdon-fermtoun

Samuel Walker is named as one of the Upperton tenants in an 1813 advertisement (in the local paper, inviting applications for leasing). Jane Walker, presumably his daughter, was born in 1801 there. Her story is told below. (Ed. In fact the Jane Walker referred to is probably the daughter of John Walker)

John Walker was a shoemaker by trade, and farmed a strip of land in the township until about 1850. He had a son William, who also worked as a shoemaker who took over the croft, and a daughter Jean (or Jane) – her story is told below.

William and his sister continued to live at Upperton until Jane's death in 1879.

Peter Anderson shared a small croft of 2 acres with his father William. He was unmarried and lived with his sister Henrietta as housekeeper. Peter Anderson and Jean (or Jane) Walker had an illegitimate daughter, Jane, in 1837/8. Jane was living with her mother in the 1841 census (listed as Jean age 3 and recorded as 'niece'), but by 1871 she has taken the name of Jane Anderson. In the 86 Estate records, ‘Widow Anderson’ holds Lot 6, valued at £3; and in 1871, Jane Anderson is named as ‘head of the family’ and ‘occupier of 2 ½ acres arable’. Henrietta (Harriet), Peter's unmarried sister, lived nearby in a separate house, and is described as a ‘pauper’. The 90 census records Jane Anderson is living alone as a ‘crofter’, but she died that year. For me,(Prof Nisbet) after tracing her story in the records, it was a very moving experience to discover one day the gravestone in Glenbuchat Old Kirk where she is buried alongside her mother, Jane Walker.

From Aberdeenshire Epitaphs and Inscriptions by John A. Henderson
In the Aberdeen Daily Journal. 1907.

To the memory of John Gordon, late farmer in Aldivalloch, who died 14th September, 1836, aged 50 years. And of Jane Walker, his wife, who died 25th February, 1861, aged 73 years. Also of Alexander Gordon, late farmer, Aldivalloch, who died 11th December, 1875, aged 55 years. James Gordon was the principal tenant of Aldivalloch in 1696; and amongst other Gordons who have since resided there may be named-Robert Gordon in 1712, Charles Gordon in 1724, and Paul Gordon, who, in August, 1768, married Margaret Gordon, who belonged to Cabrach. The last-named was buried on 7th April, 1789. John Gordon and his wife, Jane Walker, who belonged to Glenbuchat, were married on 18th December, 1814. Besides the son, Alexander, mentioned in the inscription, they had at least two daughters, Beatrice and Helen. (All from Parish Registers.)
The name Aldivalloch has been rendered historical through the popular and stirring song, "Roy's Wife of Aldivalloch"; and the subjoined extracts from the old session records, now in the Register House, Edinburgh, are believed to refer to the marriage of Roy and his wife-"1727, January 29. It being yt John Roy, lawfull son to Thomas Roy in Aldvalloch, and Isabel Stuart, lawfull daughter to ye deceased Alaster Stuart, sometime in ye said Aldvalloch, were contracted in order for marriage they were this day proclaimed pro l mo." On February 5th and 12th, they were proclaimed for the second and third times, and on the 21st of the same month the said "John Roy and Isabel Stuart were married." Their first-born child was baptised on 25th February, 1728, and received the name of Thomas, after his paternal grandfather.
