3. Close up of ‘Addison Tartan’.

This section follows on from the previous section on the discovery of the Glenbuchat Tartan.

It gives more detail about the Glenbuchat Tartan. It introduces the Addison Tartan and explains the connection with the families involved.

The family trees have been collated from a number of sources, Roots Web, The Peerage.com, Brebner.com, and Family Tree Maker

The Glenbuchat Tartan
Further investigation was made of the information contained in the article previously mentioned by Peter MacDonald of the Tartan Design & Consultancy

The first question investigated, was whether the initials on the tartan when viewed from the other side might be I. G.

The modern letter ⟨j⟩ was firstly a variation of ⟨i⟩, and both were used interchangeably for both the vowel and the consonant, coming to be differentiated only in the 16th century.
This might mean the initials were J.G. and therefore they might refer to John Gordon of Glenbuchat Castle (Old Glenbucket)

Unfortunately for this rather fortuitous observation, it appears to be untrue. A further inspection of the tartan by Peter McDonald produced the following comment:

“Yesterday I had a look at the Glenbuchat piece again. Whilst the sewing does go through to the other side of the material they are much less distinct and are a result of the sewing rather than intended to be viewed and so I cannot imagine that they were meant to read anything other than ‘IC’
If the ‘C’ had any form of bar of tail then I could be persuaded that there was a possible connection with Iain (John) Gordon of Glenbuchat but as it doesn’t such a connection cannot reasonably be made and we are left to wonder at the identity of the owner. There are only a handful of extant examples of initialled plaids and everyone I’m aware of carries the initials of the weaver/owner and in every case that was a woman. That does not mean that that was the case here but as we don’t know the identity of the individual the ‘I’ could equally be; Innes, Isobel, Iver, Igrene or some other name. I guess we’ll never know.”

If anyone else has any solutions to identity of the initials please let me know.

Addison Tartan:
In researching a Glenbuchat Tartan I came across the following entry in the genforum.genealogy.com web site.

My Gt Gt Gt grandmother was Ann Farquharson. She was born in 1823 at Belnaglack Glenbuchat and married my Gt Gt Gt grandfather John Addison in 1853. We are also related to the Forbes family of Tombreck Glenbuchat. My ancestors fought at Culloden and we still have a sword and silk tartan square handed down from my Gt Gt Gt grandmother.

Mr Addison the contributor has contributed to the Web site before ( Addison Family )and he further added

My Ancestor was William Farquharson who fought on the Government side; I think he came from Allargue, his two brothers fought for Charles.
Easy way is to type in Farquharson Allargue & this will take up D W Walker, Blue Yonder.
Go to table 2 & William Farquharson, this lists John Farquharson c 1 Aug 1771 on line 3 He is Father or Grandfather of Anne Farquharson my Gt Gt Grandmother.
William Farquharson was Protestant & fought on the Government side at Culloden, his two Brothers were Jacobites, I found an article on the opening of the new Culloden visitor centre & a young lad who was chosen to open it is also related to William Farquharson, hope this helps.

I obtained a photo of the ‘Addison Tartan’ and sent it off to Peter MacDonald of the Tartan Design & Consultancy and unfortunately he does not feel it comes from Culloden. He said:

“I’ve had a look at the image of the ‘so-called’ Addison tartan. I can say quite categorically that its mid-C19th and does not date to the Culloden era.

I don’t believe that this is the silk square referred to by your correspondent. The material appears to be a fine wool, possibly cashmere and dates to c1860-80 and is similar to a couple of fine shawls I’ve seen previously but in different tartans. The sett is a version of Victorian version of MacKenzie in which the usual green and black are rendered in shades of tan (brown). In that sense one could describe it as a ‘Trade Fancy’.

Interestingly, and unusually, this piece is single width and offset so it could have been joined to make a double width plaid/shawl. I would be able to tell more confirm all of the above if I could actually see the piece at some point”

Again if anyone can add any information about this tartan piece, please let me know.

Better results were obtained to the enquiry into the people mentioned in the first report, the Brebber family and the Addison family and the fact that they were linked. It turns out that all the people mentioned, the Brebbers, Addisons and Farquharsons are all inter linked by marriage. The noted links are highlighted in red type

Duff House MS 3175 Bundle LXV K27 for 1738 shows a John Farqson as tenant Newtown in Invernettie. Is this him living next to his brother below?
He was father of six young children.
He made over the property to his half-uncle, Robert.
He gained the rank of Captain in 1745 in the service of the James Farquharson of Balmoral's Regiment. He fought in the Jacobite Rising in 1745, and was captured after Culloden at Inverness and Tilbury.
He was transported to London on a Government vessel in dreadful conditions
On 8 November 1746 he was tried and sentenced to death, but escapedon 21 April 1748 and lived for many years in Dunkirk and Florence.

William Farquharson was Protestant & fought on the Government side at Culloden, his two Brothers were Jacobites
William was omitted from the Broudearg manuscript of 1737. FG suggests this may have occurred because he was the only Protestant member of his family. Duff House MS 3175 Bundle LXV K27 for 1738 shows a William Farqson as tenant in half of Torrancroy in Invernettie. In 1768 Alexander McHardy in Tolduquhill in his will settled an account of 3s-9d sterling due to William Farqson in Achearnach Presumably this was due to this William or his son below.

In Duff House Papers ( Aberdeen University MS 3175/ 1472/1) James Stuart reports to the Earl of Fife in 1788 that 'Belnaglack being eight oxgates land and possessed by Germ Ritchie and his two sons in law Alexr Farquharson & William Brodie, William Brodie possesses three oxgates and Germ Ritchie the fourth. William Brodie was [designed] at the setting of the tack in [Whit] 1782 to get Germ's oxgate at his death and then they would both possess alike. I believe their abilities are much the same, they are both due rent 1787, if any difference Alexander Farquharson is the most substantial.' In the margin the Earl responds that what was designed should be implemented - once rents for 1787 have been paid.

Farquharson Alexander 07/11/1838 late in Belnaglack in the parish of Glenbucket, sometime in Jobshill in the island of Jamaica, Aberdeen Sheriff Court Inventories SC1/36/15
This was found by Suzanne who on http://www.victorianweb.org/history/letters/jamaica.html
also found a letter about emigrant Scots in the West Indies from Mr Paterson, Jamaica, 9th Decr. 1837 to James Murray Esqr, Advocate Aberdeen. This refers to 'Job's Hill' as an estate at St. Mary's in Jamaica that belonged to a Walter Hyslop who died in 1824. Job's Hill then appears to have been owned by John Farquharson who had 672 slaves (or 672 acres or both).
