The Michie Collection

I am grateful for the relatives of Roma Michie who was born 100 years ago, for donating some photographs and postcards of Glenbuchat which had been sent to her and her sister.
The following pages are related to the Michie family from Sluggie near Badenyon in Glenbuchat

The Post cards of Glenbuchat, the photo of Donald Grassick and of the Glenbucket School come from the estate of the late Roma Michie. 2 of the post cards are to Roma’s sister Norma who was a senior Nurse and worked in a number of Prison Institutions. Roma and Norma Michie lived in Aberdeen for most of their lives, before later moving to Norfolk

Roma Fraser's (nee Michie) grandparents, John and Mary Michie, lived at Sluggie a croft near Badenyon at the western end of Glenbuchat. Her father, also John, founded Michie's the chemist in Aberdeen.

John Michie, and his younger brother, Charles, born at Sluggie later attended Gordon’s College in Aberdeen. Both became pharmacists and opened their own chemist shops in the 1920s.

John Michie’s first chemist shop was in Torry, Aberdeen. It was bombed during the Second World War and required major restoration. He later opened a second shop in Rosemount, Aberdeen, in partnership with a local businessman, under the name “Michie & McKenzie”. After John’s death, the shop was sold to Charles’s family. That branch of the business continues today as Charles Michie’s Chemists in Aberdeenshire.

Roma had 3 sons. Roma's husband Allan Fraser worked in forestry but they divorced. and Roma raised the sons on her own. Unfortunately, two of the boys died in early life. Roma's sister Norma never married. She was quite high up in nursing and specialised in Prison Nursing.
