George McIntosh Hardie was born in 1936 in the City of Aberdeen. At Aberdeen Grammar School his two passions were the Spanish language and Art and these two continued throughout his life.
George studied at the Grays School of Art in Aberdeen. When the time came for him to choose what to specialise in, one lecturer asked George to do silversmithing. he thought for a long time and then replied that he could not live without colour.
His working life was spent teaching Art at schools in Glasgow working in Goldbergs Department Store masterminding their stunning mechanical displays and lecturing at the Aberdeen College of Commerce.
George married Elspeth Forbes, daughter of Sir John Forbes the 6th Baronet of Newe and Edinglassie. Latterly they lived near the site of the Old Castle Newe in Strathdon in what is now called House of Newe.
Once retired his wife Elspeth said one day that George was an artist so why didn’t he paint. Thus, a series of paintings mainly of Strathdon but also of Spain followed. Elspeth sadly died in 2011 at the age of 74.
In 2016 George married Lilian Laing and they lived at Ivy Cottage at Waterside Strathdon.
George died in 2023 but a few years before his death his family produced a book of photographs of his paintings entitled ‘A life in Colour’. It is from this book that the photos in this section of the web site are taken
.
He was a loving husband to his wife Elspeth and latterly Lilian and was a devoted dad to Katharine, Ruth and Jonathan and the late baby David. Cherished grandpa to Ciaran, Roseanna and Hannah. These pictures are his memorial.
