Baltimore Steading Wall Writings

During the renovation of the Steading at Baltimore Farm writing was noted on the walls and some are recorded in the pictures above.

It was common for farm workers to write their thoughts on to the wood panels of the barns and steadings. Sometimes these were records of the weather, the types of crops planted, and time of harvesting. This acted as an almanac of the farm activity useful for comparing future years. Some were poems and biblical or religious tracts. Others were just names and dates recording the presence of a farm labourer who may in his time travel between many farms. Finally some were just rude and on rare occasions obscene.

Corning I assume refers to the fact that the horses were probably not in the stable for the winter and being fed corn

James Yeats is not a man
But a bloody ass

Obviously someone was upset by Mr James Yeats. I wonder how long he was employed after writing this. James Yeats (see famly history below) was apparently farmer at Baltimore in Glenbuchat in the 1950s onward.
