Asher

The last recorded settlement in Belnacraig just across the track form Craighead, is what was known as Asher’s Cottage. In fact for a while the hill was known as Asher’s Brae.

Al that is left at the site of the cottage is a number of stones and a wooden shed on the site of the croft. (pictured above)

The last mention of habitation at the top of the hill is a single mention of ‘Belnacraig Camp’ in the 1851 census. Judging from its position in the Census list, the camp probably occupied land at the top of the hill between Craighead and Smiddyford on the Culstriffen Road. Presumably they were only there temporarily.

The census indicates that they were travelling beggars and had employment as umbrella menders.
