2 House of Newe ? c 18002 House of Newe ? c 1800
This painting may well have been commissioned by John Forbes, Bombay Jock, when he returned from India and when he started buying up the estates in Strathdon. This is the first of three paintings of the area made before the building of Castle Newe and a fourth one of the Castle once it was built probably commissioned by Sir Charles Forbes 1st baronet (The 4 Paintings follow each other in the Album)

This is a very interesting picture as it represents the only image of the original House of Newe that I am aware of. The House of Newe (originally spelt New) was built by John Forbes, the 3rd Laird (died 1616), in 1604 and it was replaced with Castle Newe in 1831 by Sir Charles Forbes the 1st baronet of Newe. Note that the walled garden of the Castle is in the same place as the walled garden of the House of Newe on the right of the house
The pictures show:
1 A panoramic view of the Don River looking westwards after the farm of Buchaam.
The isolated house on the right is the House of Newe, the site where Castle Newe was built.
2 A closer up view of the House of Newe showing on the right the walled garden
3 A closer up view of the House of Newe which was incorporated into the actual Castle Newe
