1.The car of Sir Charles Stewart Forbes 5th Bt. of Newe at the Devil’s Elbow
2. A close up of the radiator of the car
3. An early AA Badge
The above picture states on the back:
“The Forbes' Chauffeur Mr Stavert, going over the Devil’s Elbow.”
It is taken probably about 1910 by Sir Charles Forbes 5th Bart.
The picture has a number of points of interest.
Firstly, it is a genuine colour picture which was rare in 1910
It was probably taken by Sir Charles himself, as he was a keen photographer and it probably used the colour process, he developed himself. He took many photos of Castle Newe and his family

The car in question is a Maudsley probably a 1909 Maudslay Landaulet but has had the back pram type roof replaced with metal construction. The Maudsley Landaulet was powered by a 17hp Overhead Twin-Cam engine, and was notable for its folding roof. The car is relevant as Sir Charles was a director and major shar holder of the Maudsley Car Company and in fact raced one at Brooklands.

It is an excellent photograph, most likely taken by Sir Charles himself. The car is stationary at the Devil’s elbow, an old sharp corner in the main rod a few miles outside Braemar and 40 miles from Newe. There is a mark on the road in the lower left corner indicating that something was dragged from the car possibly the photographer’s tripod. The photograph may have been taken to advertise the car.
The badge on the radiator is an early AA badge. The AA was started in 1905.
