The Baltimore Picture

Christopher Bryant from Massachusetts USA has posed a challenge to identify the above picture.

Chris writes.

“The frame for the miniature is consistent with the backing card in being from the 1850’s or early 1860’s. The miniature itself, however, is much earlier - closer to c.1775 - 1780. I am a specialist researcher in British military uniforms, and this looks to me like an infantry officer of about that date. There is other circumstantial evidence that may point toward this officer possibly having served in the American War of Independence, possibly with one of the American Loyalist regiments.

The backing card was evidently cut out of some period document, and I wonder if it was a map. "October 1853" is certainly convenient in establishing the date! The wording around the lower right edge I take to be “Forbes, Bart.” (baronet).”

If anyone has clues to the identity of the picture please email the web site using the email address on the introductory page.
