Broombrae is a cottage just 50 yards up the hill from Balnagowan. The cottage was two dwellings side by side, East and West Broombrae. East Broombrae was occupied by the Shearer family and West Broombrae by the McHardy family. These photos show the close family connections that existed in the Glen.
Robert Murdoch was born in Belnaboth across the glen and retired to Bowiebank just 30 yards below Balnagowan. Bob Murdoch married Nan Shearer of East Broombrae and his sister. Bob’s sister, apparently nicknamed ‘Jinx’ married Charles McHardy presumably from West Broombrae.
Little is known about the McHardy family but one son was killed in the First World War:
