Belnacraig
In the centre of Glenbuchat is the largest of the original Clachans, Belnacraig.
Belnacraig is the hill in the centre of the Glen and the Belnacraig settlement is the group of houses up the hill. At the foot of the hill is Craigton with the shop, church, Hall and some houses. This page deals with the dwellings on the hill.

Gealic derivation of the name Belnacraig. (Town on a hill.)
Baile, town;
na, of the;
craige, gen. of creag, hill.

The above maps show Belnacraig in 1850 (upper map) and 1903 (lower map)
There is little change except for the addition of the two properties lower down on the hill but the field boundaries have changed.

For many years the hill at Belnacraig was known as Ashers Brae. This was because the now demolished home of the Asher family was at the top of the brae. You can see the house in the above maps on the left at the top of Belnacraig, west of Craighead cottage.

From The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland survey

“A township of two foci, comprising seventeen roofed buildings, one unroofed structure and thirteen enclosures is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire 1869, sheet lx). Sixteen roofed buildings and fourteen enclosures are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1975).” RCAHMS (AKK) 8 April 1999.

“The township of Belnacraig extends 300m from N to S down the E flank of the hill upon which Craig Wood, now a conifer plantation, was planted in the 19th century.
On the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire 1869, sheet lx) sixteen buildings are depicted here and the toun has two distinct foci. Only minor changes occurred between then and the publication of the 2nd edition of the map in 1903, and at least ten of the buildings shown in 1903 appear to be depicted on the modern 1:10,000 scale map, although the possibility of some rebuilding cannot be discounted.”
Visited by RCAHMS (PC), 15 June 1997.”

From the text of the Book on the Glenbuchat Ballads

In 1696 , the farms at Baltimore and Blackhillick had ten and nine tenants respectively (W.D. Simpson) By 1801 the former had been consolidated into three tacks and the latter into just one. Only a small number of ferm-touns, chiefly Belnaboth and Belnacraig continued to be let to a large number of households, and ebven then there was a tendencyfor one or two tenants to contraol a large shar of the property.Four of Belnacraigs sixteen oxgates weer sectioned off and added to Sunnybrae, creating a singlke farm that waqs four times larger than any other tack in the neighbourhood. Clusters of smal tack, particularly at Belnaboth, became enclaves of poorer tenants and sub-tenants. The physical lay out of “touns at Easterbucket, Belnaboth , Belnacraig, Upperton, and Badenyon is still evident on the oOrdinance Survey map of 1869. In fact counter to the general trend, the ferm-toun at Upperton actually expanded during (and probably as a result of) the post war depression. Between 1801 and 1813 the farm was let to four households each controlling four oxgates. In 1814, one of the tacks was split between a principal tenant and two minor tenants, and two of the remaining tacks had been similarly divided in 1838.

The maps above show how the firlds at Belnacraig were divided.

(Definition of Oxgang/Oxgate
The Imperial Dictionary gives :
"Oxgang. As much land as an ox would plough in a year, generally from 15 to 20 acres. . . . In Scotland it is termed Oxgate."
Oxgate/ Oxengate : An ox gang of land as much as may be ploughed by one ox according to the Scottish laws, thirteen acres

A davoch contains 32 oxengates of 13 acres each, or 416 acres of arable land. —(Stat. Acco. Scot., xix. 290.

Definition of tack:
A lease or an area of land held on a lease)
