Belnaglack (Glenbucket). Baile na glaic, "town of the glack or hollow in a hill, or between hills."

Tucked away on the north side of Glenbuchat is the Croft of Belnaglack. Unfortunately the cottage there was burned down by an accident a few years ago. There seems to be plans for rebuilding it.

The following outlines the people who lived there and some features of the place,

Two significant familes from Belnaglack were the Brodie and Farquharson Families.
Firstly the Brodie Family

From “Scottish notes and queries John Malcolm Bulloch – 1906”
The Brodies in Glenbucket, now Glenbuchat. —
“Since I mentioned in 2nd S., VI., 95, that I was a descendant of the Brodies of Glenbucket, a branch of the Brodiss of Brodie, my friends bearing this surname have recently furnished me with dates of births, etc., of those of Belnaglack, Backies, and Drumnagarrie, the notes going back to at least a hundred years. Though there are no Brodies now in Glenbuchat, they are by no means extinct. They are the descendants of John Brodie, third son of 12th Brodie of (see below) born at Belnaglack, Glenbuchat, in 1848, now minister at Kirkpatrick-Juxta, who is M.A., Aberdeen, 1877, and B.D., Edinburgh, 1875 ; unmarried. The Backies branch are represented by William Yool Brodie, born 12th June, 1887 at present in Aberdeen; and the Drumnagarrie section by John Brodie, born at Dykeside, Auchterless, on 22nd November, 1869, now of the Fife Arms Hotel, Aberchirder. He is unmarried.”

In Duff House Papers ( Aberdeen University MS 3175/ 1472/1)
James Stuart reports to the Earl of Fife in 1788 that 'Belnaglack being eight oxgates land and possessed by Jerome Ritchie and his two sons in law Alexr Farquharson & William Brodie, William Brodie possesses three oxgates and Germ Ritchie the fourth. William Brodie was [designed] at the setting of the tack in [Whit] 1782 to get Germ's oxgate at his death and then they would both possess alike. I believe their abilities are much the same, they are both due rent 1787, if any difference Alexander Farquharson is the most substantial.' In the margin the Earl responds that what was designed should be implemented - once rents for 1787 have been paid.

Alexander Farquharson in Belnaglack, Glenbucket

Farquharson Alexander 07/11/1838 late in Belnaglack in the parish of Glenbucket, sometime in Jobshill in the island of Jamaica, Aberdeen Sheriff Court Inventories SC1/36/15
This was found by Suzanne who on http://www.victorianweb.org/history/letters/jamaica.html also found a letter about emigrant Scots in the West Indies from Mr Paterson, Jamaica, 9th Decr. 1837 to James Murray Esqr, Advocate Aberdeen. This refers to ‘Job’s Hill' as an estate at St. Mary's in Jamaica that belonged to a Walter Hyslop who died in 1824. Job's Hill then appears to have been owned by John Farquharson who had 672 slaves (or 672 acres or both).
