Newe Castle Rotating stampStamps

The picture above demonstrates a rotary stamp which probably belonged to Sir Charles Forbes the 1st Baronet of Newe

Below the stamp is a map of the property Auchnagathie and a picture of the House in Fitzroy Square.

The stamp has six sides and may have been to stamp wax seals or may have been purely decorative. The six sides have places relevant to Sir Charles engraved in reverse. The photos show first he inverse original text and then the photo is inverted to make the text clearly readable,

Strathdon

This is the area around the river Don associated with the Forbes Family and site of Castle Newe

Edinglassie

This is the estate to the west of newe, site of Edinglassie House acquired by john Forbes, now owned by Lord Cowdray.

Lonach
Lonach Highland and Friendly Society was formed in 1823 and lonach is the name of a farm West of Edinglassie and Newe. Soon after the Highland games were formed and to reach the Games field the local men in highland costume would meet and parade to the Games. As the valley of the Don is long and thin the men from both ends of the valley met at Lonach farm and then paraded back down to the games Field.

Auchnagathil
Place names of West Aberdeenshire
Auchnagathle (Keig). 1696, Annagathell, Poll Book ; 1638, Ardragathill, Retour 242 ; 1620, Auchnagathill, Retour 167 ; and in a Rental of the Forbes Estates (not the Newe Estates) , 1552-1678, the spelling is the same, Auchnagathill, see "Church and Priory of Monymusk." I can offer only a very conjectural explanation of this name, viz., that in early times there may have been a small settlement of people from Arregaithel (Argyll), perhaps members of some raiding band, and that the land assigned to them was called by the Pictish natives Achadh nan Gdithel," field of the Gaithel, Gaedhel, or Gael." Considering how many local traditions there are of incursions by" Campbells" into Aberdeenshire, it does not seem so very wild a conjecture that the Gael of Dalriada, some centuries before, had also found their way into the Pictish territory of the north-eastern provinces. No doubt ‘gathle’ may be Pictish, and have a totally different meaning.
In 1835 George Forbes son of Sir Charles is down as occupier of the estate.
