OBITUARY. THE REV. W. PROFEIT, LATE OF GLENBUCHAT.

The Rev. William Profeit, late minister of the United Free Church and Strathdon, died yesterday morning 18 Fountainhall Road, Aberdeen. He had been in failing health for some time- Mr Profeit, who -was a brother of the late Dr Profeit, Commissioner Balmoral for Queen Victoria, was for a number of years minister Jarrow prior to being called to the charge in his native district. was educated the Aberdeen University, where he had distinguished career.
He entered King's College—in 1855—as first bursar, and due course graduated master of arts. He was ordained in 1873. In addition to faithfully discharging the duties of the pastorate in the quiet district of Glenbuchat, with its scattered population, Profeit found -time to devote attention to the study of natural science in its relation to theology. this subject he lectured the Aberdeen Philosophical Society about the year 1900, and so highly was the subject matter of the lecture appreciated that the Senatus the United Free' Church College of Aberdeen recommended him as the Thomson lecturer for the season of 1901, and this was approved of by the College Committee the General Assembly. The Thomson lectures comprise a series of ten, and Profeit this followed such eminent men who had previously held the lectureship as Sir Robert Ball, the noted astronomer; Professor Macalister, Cambridge; Dr Donald McAlister, Cambridge; Professor McKendrick, Glasgow; Sir Lauder Brunton, and Dr Hugh Macmillan, Greenock. Mr Profeit, who was 75 years of age, retired! from the active duties of the ministry about two years ago.
PRESBYTERY REFERENCE.
The Rev. J. Bonnar Russell, Bon-Accord Church, at meeting of the Aberdeen United Free Presbytery yesterday afternoon, said he desired to make intimation of an event which he knew would cause regret to some, in the passing away a good friend, the Rev. William Profeit, of Glenbuchat, who, although not a member the ' Aberdeen Presbytery, had resided within the bounds the Presbytery for three or four years, and was well known to many brethren. He had rendered thorn acceptable services on many His character and spirit were such that all who knew him regarded him with high respect, regard, and affection. would be within the recollection of many brethren that Mr Profeit was the Thomson lecturer at one time in the college there, and the volume which was the result of those lectures had taken creditable place the series, and had been translated into least one foreign language. He moved that the clerk be instructed express the sympathy of the Presbytery to the relatives. (Subdued applause.) The motion was agreed unanimously, and it was intimated that the funeral had been arranged for to-morrow to Allenvale Cemetery
