Here lies John Gordon,
sometime farmer in Achavaich,
who died Feby. 23rd, 1779,
aged 45, and a daughter Hellen,
and John, Alexr., Jean,
and Henerita Gordons,
Done by ye care of
Hellen Morrison, his spouse.
This grave was recently cleared of moss but is still difficult to read. Some of the writing can still be made out. However the inscription is recorded in .Aberdeenshire Epitaphs and Inscriptions: Historical, Biographical, Genealogical, and Antiquarian Notes’ and reproduced above.
The family history of the Gordon family is confused and different aspects appear in different sources.
The following is a family history based on the best evidence available.

mentioned in both his brothers' wills. He may be the same as the John Gordon in Crofts (also in Drumnochty), who according to the register had children;

Katherine Gordon and James Raeburn, schoolmaster, Balnacraig (see infra, pp. 126, 155), had a son, John, baptised 19th May, 1771.

He married Helen Morrison (the register calls her Morrise) and, according to the register, had

John baptised 11th February, 1776.
Peter in Crofts, who made his will at Crofts, 16th November, 1747, and it was confirmed 14th June, 1750. It shows that he had lent a good deal of money to his neighbours (see infra, pp. 154-6). The parish register give the following children

Peter Gordon also had a daughter Margaret, who married Alexander Gordon in Kirkton of Cabrach ( Aberdeen Commissarial Records, 26th March, 1759.)
Alexander in Dulax, and then in Crofts, where he succeeded his brother Peter.
He died in October, 1749. He was fairly well off, for his will (confirmed 24th August, 1750) shows that his plenishing was valued at £763 12s. Sd. Scots, and his bear and com at £381 6s. 8d. Besides this he had lent a good deal of money to his neighbours (see infra, pp. 156-7).
He married Jean Forbes, and his will and the registers show that he had the
following children :—
Peter, baptised 19th December, 1719.
William, baptised 23rd July, 1730. He was his father's sole executor, to whom his father left all his goods except the third of his domicile, whereunto Jean Forbes, the widow, had right by contract of marriage.
Alexander, mentioned in the will.
John, baptised 22nd September, 1744, He became a merchant in Aberdeen, and died 8th July, 1811.
Peter, a boy under the age of fourteen at the time of his father's death. He was dead before 11th March, 1771.
Isobel, baptised 1st july, 1722.
Jean baptised 25th April, 1725.
Agnes, baptised 12th September, 1728. She married, before her father’s death, William Smart in Donardow, and they got 300 merks under her father's will.
Hellen, baptised 8th January, 1732.
Kathran, born 4th August, 1734; baptised, 7th August. She married George Michie, Invemochty (born, 1720 ; died 10th December, 1799). She died in Aberdeen, 15th March, 1800. On her tomb-stone in Strathdon kirkyard she is wrongly stated to have been 69 years old when she died.
Henereta, baptised 11th December, 1736.
Mary, baptised 9th January, 1747. She married Alexander Gordon in Dykehead ot Belnabodach, Strathdon. Their son was Lewis Gordon, merchant in Aberdeen, who was apprenticed to his uncle John (see supra) for five years in 1790.
