William Alexander Johnston
Born 25 Feb 1882, in Glenbuchat,
Died 14 Jan 1954, in Fillmore, Sakatchewan, Canada.
Occupation: farmer, Canada; grocer's van man, 1901.
He married Jane Barclay Beattie 24 Feb 1909, in Arcola, Saskatchewan,
She was the daughter of George Beattie and Mary Riddoch. Jane Barclay Beattie was born estimated 1879, in Auchterless, died 17 Jul 1958, in Fillmore, Sakatchewan, Canada. Illegitimate
William Alexander Johnston was born February 25, 1882 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and came to Canada in 1902, first to Toronto and after a time to London, Ontario. He worked in Toronto as a labourer on a dray business hauling with horses. In the spring of 1905 he came west to Arcola, Sask. and filed on a homestead in the R.M. of Golden West #95 on Section 4-10-7-W2. He lived on his homestead till proven up, built a house and other buildings there and obtained some stock. Breaking was done with oxen before horses were obtained. He worked for Mr. James Young of the Gap View district and after a time purchased a quarter from him - namely, SW 3l-9-6-W2, where a farmstead was built. He had known the John Fowlie family in Ontario and perhaps this was why he was drawn to this part of the west. The Fowlies and the George Beattie family were his neighbours, also the Dan Mclntoshes, among others.

Some three years later, Jane Barclay Beattie came out from Aberdeenshire, Scotland to be with her parents, the George Beatties. In February, 1909, Jane Beattie and W. A. Johnston were married in Arcola at the manse by a Rev. Mr. Strachan. They came to live on the farm in the Gap View district and lived there until the spring of 1935 when they moved to Fillmore, Sask.

To this union were born six children - all born in the same house except Jessie, who was born on a neighbouring farm where the family had moved for a year. We all attended Gap View School, the two younger members finishing at Fillmore.

Our parents were good community workers, taking part in many things. Dad was Secretary-Treasurer of the school district for some thirty years; they supported Church when held in our school or a neighbouring one ; Dad always helped with the Gap View Picnic, often went to Forget in the early morning for a wagon load of supplies for the booth and then worked all day long selling same; Mother nearly always helped Mrs. Duncan make tea and coffee for the picnic supper. This was made in boilers on coal oil stoves in the school room. Dad was a member of the early United Grain Growers organization and was an early member of the Sask. Wheat Pool when it came into being.

We had one of the first radios in the district--one that you listened to with earphones. Also, we got a car, a touring Ford, about those same years.Dad always kept a herd of cattle and of course there were cows to milk , which we learned to help with. We drove a horse and buggy or team and sleigh to school as we were three miles from school.

About 1923 or so, Dad decided to have his own threshing outfit and at first he got a portable steam engine which had to be pulled by horses from set to set. Then three years later, he got a steam engine that moved in its own power and did considerable threshing with it. Later a gas tractor was purchased. This steam engine was run by various people--Dave Beattie, Bob Beattie, Fred Withune and Mr. Atchison. A few of the firemen we recall were: Fred Ludditt, Fred Duncan, Oscar Dunn, and Bill Johnston. Dad usually threshed for David Sim and some others to get help with teams to haul the stooks. We recall the dry years and grasshoppers and all the trials of the thirties.

In 1935, the family moved to Fillmore. In fact, the boys had brought the cattle there in the fall of 1934 to get feed, decided to rent the farm they moved onto for the winter, and continued to farm there. In 1946 Dad built a house in town and retired with Sons Bill and Bob continuing to farm the same land Sam had left to harvest out at Admiral, Sask., and remained out there. Gordon had just come home from overseas and bought a farm near Creelman.

The Johnston family are: Jean, who after taking a business course in Moose Jaw, went to work in an office in Morse, Sask., where she met and married Leo Bestrop, a farmer. In 1936 they moved to Fillmore, renting a farm there and later moving to Osage where they purchased land on which their son, Robert, farms. They retired to Regina and Leo passe d away in 1980. They had two children--Robert and Elaine.

William G. farmed at Fillmore until he retired. He married Mary Nixon of Fillmore and have four children--Audrey, Raymond, Beverley and Bruce. They live in Fillmore.
Robert A. also farmed and still has an interest in farming. He married Merle Sleightholm of Fillmore, and they have four children--Dorothy , Albert, Lorne and Shiela. They retired and live in Fillmore.

Samuel A. farmed at Admiral, Sask. for some years and then moved near Medicine Hat to a ranch. They run a herd of cattle and also sell gas and gravel off the land near Medicine Hat. He married Evalyn Klien of Admiral and they have six children--Sandra, Dale, Judy, Donna, Chery l, and Jean.

Jessie was a teacher and taught in Mills School near Fillmore, Prairie Lea at Cree1man and Farnham near Handsworth.~ She married Ellwood Johnston, of Kisbey. They farmed and lived near Kisbey and now live in Kisbey. They have three children--Allan, Ronald, and Isobel.

Gordon married Dorothy MacDonald of Tyvan. He served in the South Sask . Regiment overseas and was wounded in Italy. After he returned, he purchased land south of Creelman and farmed there until he sold out. He has worked out for several farmers and now is working in the Co-Op store in Creelman. They have two children--Lloyd and Lois.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnston lived on the farm at Fillmore from 1935 until 1946, when they moved to the village of Fillmore and enjoyed their retirement. Dad passed away in January, 1954 and Mother lived in their home until she passed away in July, 1958. They are buried in Fillmore Cemetery.

It is with great sadness that the family of William George (Bill) Johnston, of Fillmore announce his passing on September 12, 2003 at the age of 91 years. Bill was born in Gap View District, northeast of Stoughton on July 6, 1912, the second oldest of six children born to William A. and Jane Johnston. He lived his early years at Gap View, attending Gap View School until age 14, then farming with his dad and brothers until the family relocated to a farm three miles west of Fillmore in 1933. Bill continued to farm there with his family until 1941, with the occasional trip to Manitoba and Admiral, SK to find work when times were slow at home. In October 1941, he married Mary Nixon of Fillmore and they moved to a farm six miles northeast of Fillmore where they farmed until 1948. In December 1948 they moved into a house in town and took over a grain farm four miles west of Fillmore where he continued to farm until retiring in 1973. While still farming he also took up electrician work and continued working with local electricians well into his late 70's. Bill enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years and later did some umpiring, and was always a fan. Curling was also his great love, and he never hesitated to travel near and far for a friendly game in a competitive bonspiel. Bill was a devoted family man and community worker and enjoyed membership in the Odd Fellows Lodge, serving on many community organizations including: sports committees, Boy Scouts, curling club, the United church, and until his passing, the only remaining active charter member of the Fillmore Lions Club.
